What does it mean to be European?

An article written by the LCE students about how the European Union was created, about the European Day of Languages and European values.

1. How the European Union was created

To begin with , in 1952 six countries: France, west ,Germany, Italy,Belguim , Netherlands and
Luxembourg formed the ECSC ( the european coal and steel community ) . In 1958 they set up the
Europeans Atomic energy community (also called Euratom) to produce nulcear power together.
They also formed the European Economic Community (EEC). The EEC worked to get rid of taxes and
rules that limited trade in Europe.The ECSC, Euratom and the EEC merged in 1967 to form european
(the european communities). More countries joined EC in the 1970s and 1980s.  The EU was
officially created in 1993. The Euro was introduced in 1999 (became the officialy currency in 2002).
By 2013 the groupe had 28 members countries. However, in 2016, one members The United
Kingdom voted to leave the EU. The country left the union on January 31, 2020.

2. European Day of Languages

The european day of languages  was created The 26th September 2001. 45 countries in Europe participate on this day. It’s celebrated by the schools and organisations each year to promote language learning and cultural diversity, it alertes the public about the importance of language learning.
Europe is rich in langages , in Europe there is over 200 languages we have to recognise , use and
cherishe. The goals are to learn on and out of school , to study or for professional purposes of mobility , for pleasure and exchange. You can make new friends and contacts for example if you study abroad.
Learning other peoples’ languages is a way of helping us to understand each other better and
overcome our cultural differences. Learning differents languages is useful if you want to tavel , work , have buisness ,meet other persones, help foreigners in your own country. Language learning brings benefits to young and old so you are nerver too old to learn a language.

3. European Values

The European values are :

  • human rights : Everone has the right to have freedom, equity and liberty. You can say what you want, think what you want, have a private life, have a religion ect...
  • Equality : Every citizen has the same rights, everywhere in europe this applies. Everyone can say what they want, think what they want, the principe of equitality applies to everyone.
  • Freedom : freedom movement is the tight to move and talk freelly within the european union. Freedom means you can also have a private life, have a religion, freedom of though ect
  • Protection : In europe you are protected against wars, bandits, robbers.

4. Why the European Union is important

Europe is important for buisness, to have a job and to travel, you can speak different languages.
Also europe is important because it has a rich history and diverse cultures. Europe is extremely influncial in the world and it’s an incredibly amazing continent. Europe is important because you can communicate with european people. Finally, you should go to Europe because you will have a great life.
